Dandruff & Flaking

What is dandruff?

Dandruff (pityriasis) is the visible shedding of epidermal cells from the scalp.

While common, it presents differently depending on underlying causes - from dryness to yeast overgrowth to inflammation.

Understanding your dandruff type ensures proper treatment.

Pityriasis Simplex Capitis - Dry Dandruff

Dry dandruff occurs when the scalp becomes dehydrated, producing small, white flakes that shed easily. It’s often linked to dryness, irritation, or environmental factors.

  • Light, white-ashy flakes that fall easily
  • Dry, tight, or irritated scalp
  • Flakes clinging to hair shaft
  • More noticeable in winter or low-humidity conditions
  • Vitamin A deficiency
  • Stress or nervous-system imbalance
  • Overly hot water or harsh shampoos
  • Low hydration
  • Environmental dryness

Pityriasis Steatoides - Greasy Dandruff

Greasy dandruff forms when excess sebum mixes with scalp flakes, creating yellowish, adherent scales. This type often presents with mild inflammation, itchiness, and persistent buildup.

  • Yellow, sticky plates attached to scalp
  • Redness, inflammation, or itching
  • Oily skin with persistent buildup
  • Well-defined plaques (helps differentiate from dermatitis)
  • Excess sebum & Pityrosporum yeast
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Stress or diet changes
  • Incorrect shampoos or high heat exposure
