Guide to Alopecia Types & Treatments

Explore Simone Trichology's expert insights on various alopecia types—including Areata, Androgenetic, Scarring, Postpartum, and more—and discover personalized treatment solutions to restore hair health and confidence.

Alopecia Explanation

Alopecia refers to hair loss from the scalp or other parts of the body and can result from various causes, including genetics, hormonal changes, autoimmune disorders, trauma, or inflammation. Understanding the specific type of alopecia is essential for effective treatment and management.

Simone Trichology classifies alopecia into five distinct types to facilitate targeted diagnosis and care:

  • Alopecia Areata (Autoimmune Patchy Hair Loss): An autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks hair follicles, leading to sudden hair loss in small, round patches on the scalp or other body areas.
  • Androgenetic Alopecia (Pattern Hair Loss): A hereditary form of hair loss influenced by androgens, affecting both men and women.
  • Post-Traumatic Alopecia (Hair Loss from Physical or Emotional Trauma): Hair loss resulting from physical injury to the scalp or psychological stress.
  • Postpartum and Menopausal Alopecias (Hormonal Hair Loss): Hair shedding occurring due to hormonal fluctuations.
  • Scarring Alopecia (Cicatricial Alopecia): A group of rare disorders that destroy hair follicles, leading to permanent hair loss and scarring.

Common Conditions Often Mistaken for Alopecia

Conditions frequently confused with alopecia include Tinea Capitis, Trichotillomania, and Telogen Effluvium:

  • Tinea Capitis is a fungal infection of the scalp, primarily affecting children. It presents with scaly patches of hair loss, broken hairs, and sometimes inflammation. Unlike alopecia areata, tinea capitis often involves scaling and may require antifungal treatment
  • Trichotillomania is a psychological condition characterized by the compulsive pulling of one's own hair, leading to irregular patches of hair loss. The hair loss is self-induced and may have an associated behavioral component, distinguishing it from alopecia areata.
  • Telogen Effluvium is a temporary hair shedding condition triggered by stress, illness, or hormonal changes. It results in diffuse thinning across the scalp rather than distinct bald patches, differentiating it from alopecia areata.

Alopecia Areata (Autoimmune Patchy Hair Loss)

Characteristics
  • Autoimmune Nature: The immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, leading to hair loss.
  • Patchy Hair Loss: Sudden onset of round or oval bald patches on the scalp or other body areas.
  • Non-Scarring: The condition does not cause scarring or scaling of the scalp.
  • Variable Progression: Hair loss can be limited to patches or progress to complete scalp (alopecia totalis) or body hair loss (alopecia universalis).
  • Nail Involvement: In some cases, nail pitting or ridging may occur.
  • Unpredictable Course: The condition can spontaneously resolve or relapse, making its course unpredictable.
Treatment Focus

The primary goals in treating Alopecia Areata are to:

  • Suppress the Immune Response: Reduce the autoimmune attack on hair follicles.
  • Stimulate Hair Regrowth: Encourage the reactivation of hair follicles to promote hair growth.
  • Manage Triggers: Address potential triggers such as stress or underlying health conditions.
  • Monitor Progress: Regularly assess treatment efficacy and adjust as needed

Androgenetic Alopecia (Pattern Hair Loss)

Characteristics
  • Genetic Predisposition: A hereditary condition influenced by genetic factors.
  • Hormonal Influence: Driven by androgens, particularly dihydrotestosterone (DHT), leading to hair follicle miniaturization.
  • Distinct Patterns:
    • Men: Receding hairline and thinning at the crown, often forming an "M" shape.
    • Women: Diffuse thinning over the crown with a preserved frontal hairline.
  • Progressive Nature: Gradual hair thinning over time without treatment.
  • Non-Scarring: Hair follicles remain intact, allowing for potential regrowth with appropriate therapy
Treatment Focus

At Simone Trichology, our approach to treating Androgenetic Alopecia centers on:

  • Hormonal Regulation: Addressing the effects of androgens on hair follicles.
  • Follicle Revitalization: Stimulating dormant hair follicles to promote regrowth.

  • Mechanical Stress: Hair loss due to constant friction or tension from tight hairstyles, headgear, or repetitive movements.
  • Chemical Exposure: Damage from harsh chemicals in hair treatments leading to follicle weakening.
  • Emotional Stress: Severe psychological stress triggering hair shedding conditions like telogen effluvium.

Postpartum and Menopausal Alopecias (Hormonal Hair Loss)

Characteristics
  • Hormonal Fluctuations: Both postpartum and menopausal hair loss are primarily driven by significant hormonal changes—specifically, a drop in estrogen levels.
  • Postpartum Hair Loss (Telogen Effluvium):
    • Onset: Typically begins 2–4 months after childbirth.
    • Pattern: Diffuse shedding across the scalp.
    • Duration: Often resolves within 6–12 months as hormone levels stabilize.
    • Cause: Sudden hormonal shifts post-delivery cause more hairs to enter the resting (telogen) phase, leading to increased shedding.
  • Menopausal Hair Loss (Female Pattern Hair Loss):
    • Onset: Commonly occurs during perimenopause and postmenopause.
    • Pattern: Gradual thinning, especially at the crown and along the part line.
    • Cause: Decreased estrogen and progesterone levels, coupled with relatively higher androgens, can shrink hair follicles and slow hair growth.
Treatment Focus

At Simone Trichology, our approach to treating postpartum and menopausal alopecias centers on:

  • Hormonal Balance Support: Utilizing treatments that help mitigate the effects of hormonal fluctuations on hair follicles.
  • Follicle Revitalization: Stimulating dormant or weakened hair follicles to re-enter the growth phase.
  • Scalp Health Optimization: Enhancing the scalp environment to support healthy hair growth.

Scarring Alopecia (Cicatricial Alopecia)

Scarring Alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss due to the destruction of the hair follicles, is a sobering reality. This type of Alopecia is generally irreversible, a fact that underscores the seriousness of the condition.

Scarring Alopecia is caused by a variety of factors, including skin infections, burns, freezing, skin destruction, or cuts from an accident. Understanding these causes is crucial, as it helps us comprehend that existing problems in the skin and hair are not produced by mechanical or chemical action, but are caused directly or indirectly by the physical or pathological state of the person.

Regrettably, there is currently no known treatment for Scarring Alopecia, making it a particularly challenging condition to manage.
